Fun Stuff
Karen is a self-taught artist and at one time in her life believed that she didn’t have the talent to draw or paint. In 2006 she opened her mind to the possibility and began doing Chinese brush paintings. She’s always been interested in watercolor and took a class to get started. Now, she does both watercolors and Chinese brush paintings.
Karen has been writing for two decades and enjoys putting words to paper, but the critical part of her brain never turns off. Art on the other hand feeds her soul. The color stimulates her and the blending and shaping of color excites her and her senses. The fluidity of watercolor offers her the freedom to create whatever she wishes. Art is just what it is, nothing more. Influenced by impressionists, Karen likes to experience the vagueness of a painting—something that you look at and get a “sense” of it. It’s not defined and, therefore, open to interpretation.
Karen was doing what most artists do, look at something and copy it. After she received a copy of Watercolor Magazine that featured impressionists, Karen discovered what excites her about painting. Setting down shapes into forms that allow the viewer’s eye to define it the way they see the painting is her goal. She’s been influenced by John Singer Sargent, Eric Wiegardt, and Kathy Collins.
